At the center of the mesmerizing rolling meadows, lived a boy named Shepherd. His existence was essentially unadulterated, simple, and honest. His primary duty was to tend to his flock of rams.
Their gentle baas and the murmuring of the gales among the lone tree on the peak were his constant associates. Day after day, guarding his wards imbued in him a feeling of quiet fulfillment.
However, there were at times moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would here long for company. In one such instance out of sheer monotony, the shepherd boy devised a mischievous plot.
Stories of wild beasts hunting on sheep had been around for a while in the hamlet. So, the boy opted to leveraged this fear and played a trick on the villagers.
One morning he raced into the village shouting “Wolf! There is a wolf that has taken my sheep!” The scared villagers sprinted up the hills to offer assistance but found nothing threatening.
The boy giggled at the dilemma on their faces. This trick laughed for a few days more. Yet, one day, a real wolf actually attack the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy ran for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but could protect only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he went back to the town only to be met with a reprimand on honesty and the consequences of dishonesty.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the risks of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once violated, is difficult to regain. It's a story as relevant today as it was anciently.
